(Ed.) Autoweek 11-30-92 Audi to F1? Audi could be in F1 by 1994. Audi president Ferdinand Piech had work begun on a 3.5-liter V10, and now that he's chairman-elect of the parent Volkswagen AG, he's in a position to turn that develpoment programm into a full- racing effort. CHICO AND THE MAN Valkswagen AG announced it will go ahead with two future products: The SWATCH cat partnership project and the plucky CHICO show car. "VW has decided to go with Swatch, and with the Chico," confirmed VW U.S. spokesman Larry Nutson. "All the details are sketchy, but VW AG has gone that next step further by making the decisions to go ahead with the projects." Nutson said the Chico will be in production by 1995 in Wolfsburg, initially powered by a small engine running on gosoline. At this point, the Swatch car has no production date. No definite U.S. plans have come forth, but both cars are believed likely to be imported. CARS EUROPE NEVER BUILT Fifty Years of Experimental Cars, is the title of a new book featuring the Audi Avus Quattro on the cover. $30.00 from Sterling Publishing Co. Ind., 387 Park Ave. S., NY, NY 10016-8810 (Ed.) Autoweek 12-7-92 TRANSITIONS Franz-Josef Kortum will succeed Ferdinand Piech as Audi AG chairman on Jan. 1, 1993, when Piech assumes Volkswagen AG's chairmanship. Kortum formerly was in charge of German truck sales at Mercedes-Benz AG. AUDIS FOR McLAREN? Michael Andretti will have leftover Honda engines in the McLaren MP4/7A when he begins a test session Dec.4 at Estoril. It now seems most likely McLaren will obtain customer Ford HB V8s for the 1993 F1 season, but published reports say McLAREN AND AUDI MAY DO A DEAL -- but not until the 1995 season. Audi has begun development of a 3.5-liter V10 and also is considering the feasability of a W12 configuration. -glen -glen
