It just sounded like somebody was rattling a cone in it. I took it off and emptied the bits out (etc) and put it back on (no smog checking here, the dealer wanted $750!!!!). How ever, in your case I would check with the dealer. I think there is a law (I know there is in Canada) that all smog equipment on any car must be functional ( and therefore warrenteed) for five years. I friend of mine had the cat replaced on his 1990 Barreta GTZ last year, under this law.
