ATF fluid change

I was planning to change the ATF fluid on my
'85 5000S, and i was wondering if there is
anything i should watch out for....i know the 
procedure, but i've never done this, and i'd
like to be informed of any surprises..!

btw, i called around for gaskets for the ATF
pan and the strainer and i was quoted in the
region of $25 until i called the local Audi
dealer who quoted me $15 !!

All this is an attempt to diagnose the cause
of the auto tranny shifting from 1 to 3....
Ned - i'm finally doing the first thing you
suggested.

As an aside, is it true that the ATF fluid
actually performs some torque-sensing function..?
