Ditto from me.  A great engine cleaner that I love is "Simple Green".
Spray it liberally and at full strength onto a cold engine, let it sit
for a few minutes and then hose it off with a cold water spray.  It
does not smell bad and it won't hurt anything that water would not
hurt.  Great mounds of goo may take scraping or scrubbing.  Buy it at
auto parts stores and many other places.  It can be diluted for
lighter cleaning jobs.  I use it for a million other things also.
