My dad's '85 4k has the same problem.  In his car its caused by a ground 
loop between the head and the boosted antena.  Best bet is to turn the 
volume down until the unit is powered.

The AM antena is internal (I believe), so its probably a defective unit, 
although with Alpine's track record, I find this hard to believe.
