In a message dated 96-03-01 11:39:24 EST, you write: >functioning turbo actually be damaged by overspeeding due to no load on the >compressor -- like if the IC or a turbo compressor output hose blows while >WFO -- boost gets vented to the atmosphere and hence no overboost condition >or automatic fool-pump shutdown? Those problems usually make the turbos spin down pretty quickly, cuz the engine basically stalles..... What would be the failure mode of an >'overspeeded' turbo? Impeller explosion? Sure, or bearing failure, causing the impellors to hit the housings, then see your above.... > Or would the max speed be >self-limiting? Lotsah people 'blowedup' ICs and hoses, but you don't hear >about exploded turbos.....? (yet :) > No need for a pop off valve in an audi.... I have one of the most radical k26 based systems available and have run in excess of 22psi, no schrapnel yet.... Scott
