My Audi 200 Quattro modell 89 with AC did tow my BMW M3 with
spare tires and tools ( about 4000 lbs ) without problems. 
Even in hot summers with temperatures at 33 Celsius and above , 
I never had any troubles. The only minor problem I found is the 
gearing of my car. With the cruise control set at 65 mph , fifth 
gear is much too long and therefore it is much better to stay in 
forth gear all the time.
The other weak spot with heavy trailers is the totally underrated
stock clutch. With a fully loaded trailer you have no problem
to fry the clutch in seconds.
