You didn't say what year 5000 you had, but I believe that most, if not all
of them have hydraulically actuated clutches, so the likelihood of a broken
clutch cable is pretty slight.  It may be possible that the clutch hydraulic
system is dry ...

I had a problem with lubrication of the throwout bearing on my old Audi Fox,
which caused the TO bearing to wear completely through the actuating fingers
on the pressure plate.  I would imagine that this could be possible for the 
5000 as well.  

If you don't trust the mechanic get a second opinion ...
