If the charge is inadequate, the clutch will engage the compressor but a safety switch disengages it. This cycle will repeat every so often, depending on how low the charge is. The system will continue to attempt to engage the compressor as long as the "A/C" button on the dash is activated. If you are hardly getting any cold air, and the compressor cycles as described above, then there is probably (and unfortunately) a leak in the system... Chris 1988 90
