Steve Buchholz wrote regarding the injector fan "I wouldn't be 
too worried if mine did not work, I don't believe that the blower is
meant to protect anything in particular, simply to reduce the 
likelihood of hot start problems."  Someone else said they
had decided to remove it.  

My mechanic who was an Audi workshop foreman and latterly
a mechanic with the Audi Sport rallying team told me
that they fitted these things not only to cool the injectors but 
because on some early cars the injectors were popping out
under high pressure!
