I don't have the Bentley manuals, but from other discussions they seem to be very strongly modelled on the European documentation with Audi's approval. The 1984/5 wiring documentation is a mess. Basically, the German system starts with Schematic No. 1, and obsoletes this in stages. The numbering gives some idea of how their ideas developed: Audi quattro 1980/1 1 Central Locking 2 Electric windows & mirrors 4 Cruise control 5 Rear wiper 6 Air conditioning 7 Audi quattro 1982 3 Central Locking 2 Electric windows & mirrors 4 Cruise control 5 Rear wiper 6 Air conditioning 7 Audi quattro 1983 13 Electronic instruments 8 Auto-check system 9 etc. When you get down to the 1984/5 years, the 1984 plan is number 21 and the 1985 plan is number 17. Was the 1984 plan issued _after_ the 1985 one? It's partly hand-written. Putting together a diagram for a specific vehicle is essentially a custom operation - you need to establish a _time_ point in the diagrams, and then go backwards to accumulate all of the pieces you need. I've filed my diagrams, as the factory recommend, in descending number order. This isn't, of itself, a guarantee of success because some of the diagrams are not thereby in date order. You have to put together the relevant ones from the index. The relevant numbers for my vehicle are 39 (base), 28, 29, 33, 37, 41. -- Phil Payne phil@sievers.com Committee Member, UK Audi [ur-]quattro Owners Club
