Sorry, guys, I've missed the begining of the thread. Why put a Zener across an A/C
compressor to begin with?

Anyway, James is right on the Zener application, I would only like to add that a 
Zener is supposed to be connected with a current limiting resistor in series. The 
value of this resistor can be calculated based on the Zener's max current spec.
