Um, break the window?    Or remove the front door handle screw and (ugh)
break the handle free.

No, seriously this sounds like a case for a mechanic with good "slim jim"
experience.  

You are into the car already, aren't you?  I just realized that.  Can you
get to the inside handle attachment screw?  If you can get the handle to
hang loose maybe you can get a better pull on the lever.  But it sounds like
your latch mechanism is kaput.  I would not want this to happen to me.  Can
you get a thin flat wrench in to the post the latch attaches to and loosen
it, maybe it will all come out?  Good Luck!

Reminds me of the time (Bored yawn from rest of list) I had to use 3 ft of
extension and a socket to remove the trunk lock on my 5k through the speaker
holes in the rear deck.

Last question - do you *have* to open the door to remove the panel?  It
might be difficult, but maybe it will come off with the door shut.  Lots of
awkward screws, but possible?
