a/c programmer

I'm sure this issue has been brought up too many times in the past, but 
I have the symptoms of air only blowing out defroster vents.  Thanks to 
Gary, I now have the TSB for this problem.  Before pulling the unit 
out, do I need to replace it, or has anyone successfully cleaned the 
solenoid valves, or replaced just the valves?  I am very good with 
electronics, and it seems that this is what Mountain Automotive, or 
whoever else rebuilds these units would do.  Also, can I just use a 
normal in-line fuel filter, such as used on air-cooled VW's, or do I 
need to order the Audi part from Linda?  Any help would be appreciated, 
my feet are getting cold!
