Check engine light

What is hopefully a simple question:

I got a momentary check engine light this morning.  Is it possible to read the
codes on the 3B motor w/ Motronic ignition via a test LED?  The Bentley lists
this procedure only for the K-Jetronic motors.  Or do I need the 1551 wonder
tool?

Conditions:  95-ish mph, shifting from 4 th to 5th coming off full boost, 1.7
bar on the stock gauge.  No audible knocking, but the radio was up and there was
a wee bit of wind noise.  No hesitations or power losses.  Full boost and power
felt good up to 130 mph.  No drivability problems, idle solid at 800+/-, cold
and warm starts good.  Original  o2 sensor, 70k miles.
