cooling fan run-on after shutoff - C-GT

I never noticed my cooling fan coming on after turning the ignition off
before.  I think this is my first summer w/the car.  Memory's a bit
fuzzy!

Is it really necessary?  Is there a cure if not?  It's bad enough my
charging system is on the weak side, then I gotta run the fan when the
engine's not even on?

I realize (or have heard) that the engine/water temp actually climbs for
a while immediately after shutdown.
