86 or 87 5ksT stuck in R (auto)

Does anyone know of a "patch" to get a stuck auto out of reverse and into drive to make a short trip?  I want to get it home without having to flatbed it 
if I can.  The rest of the car is pretty good.

PS:  Dad just bought a mint '90 V8 Quattro from the same people.  It's gorgeous.
