In my experience, when the fuel pump finally goes, you are pretty much
stuck.  You might get a few miles of bucking and heaving with the engine
cutting out intermittently before it finally expires.  If you're really lucky
you'll be able to shut the car down for an hour, let the pump cool, and
nurse it home.  But I've also seen them just plain seize and refuse to turn
ever again.
