I had an 84 auto that had been sitting for some time before I bought it.  It
would not shift at all at startup, it would take a warm up of two to three
minutes, and after that it would shift fine.  A friend who does trans work
said it may be hardening of the seal in the valve body.  So I changed the
valve body myself, rather easy, and the problem is fixed.  

This may be the case with yours as well.  I hope this helped.
