Importing Canadian Audis

Dear Quattrophiles-

It looks like my best shot at finding a good used quattro is one from the
Vancouver, B.C. area.

Unfortunately, the 4000q and 88,89 90q that I am looking at do not
automatically meet US compliance standards.  Audi says that they can issue
a letter of compliance, but they will need 2 weeks to figure out from the
VIN# if the car qualifies.

Has anyone on the list attempted this?  With what models?

Any info is much appreciated,
