Phil, what about Gunson's offerings - I bought their GBP50 Gas Analyser a few years ago - seems to work quite well. It's the one with the analogue scale. Their latest one seems to have a digital readout. It doesn't measure CO directly (even though the readout is marked as such) - it measures CO2 and presumes a linear relationship between them which I believe is valid for low values from car engines. I set up one of my cars for an MOT using this - the professional one used by the MOT station which is presumably calibrated regularly was within 10%.
