What Audi model are we talking about? On 5KT the best method is tho remove the right headlight, the intake boot to turbocharger metal pipe and the air horn from the airbox. Plug the turbocharger intake hose with a towel so you don't drop anything in there. Then unclip the metal clips that hold the filter cover to the airbox. With some intelligent wiggling you'll be able to remove the cover and the filter through the headlight opening. Before putting everything back, it's good opportunity to inspect all the vacuum hoses that are better visible now. As far as I know this procedure is basically applicable to Ur-quattros as well.
