The euro spec cars without A/C don't have the battery under the rear seat - it's in the plenum chamber, where the evaporator housing is located on air conditioned cars. On these cars it's possible to remove the blower motor without moving the heater box. Seems like Audi engineers couldn't find a suitable place for the A/C unit, so they decided to clear some space by moving the battery to the rear.
