I went to auto upholstery school for a about a year (high school class). Hog ring pliers are REALLY easy to use. Just about every car seat I've ever re-upholstered used 'em. The nice thing about them is they will punch holes through fabric (instead of using a punch - 1 step vs. 2 step) when attaching to seat frames and stuff. The not so nice thing about them is they can in time cut through the fabric and loosen the seat cover over the frame. Thet also seem to rust. If you are using the old seat cover and the attachment holes in the seat cover are pre-existing (hog-ring created), go ahead and use wire ties. Hog rings are probably faster, and you can create a tighter fit using them (maybe), but I'm sure wire ties will work.
