What you refer to is the engine code, not the head code. The US-spec 5KTs had either KH (84-85) or MC (86-88) engines. The head carries a standard Audi part number (9 digits + optional letter or two). I think that "AB" are last two letters from the part number of the head. No Audi engine carried the "AB" code.
