4k odometer problem (last time)

OK, before I put the lid back on my dash, I'd like to give one more try to 
fixing my odometer. People mention a plastic gear that cracks or slips, 
thus causing the problem. Where is this part? Is it in the instrument pod, 
or on the cable? Remedies to solve the problem? I have virtually no slack 
in my cable, is this normal (it makes reconnecting difficult)? Would 
swapping the pod resolve the problem?
