86 4KCSQ - have been reporting back to the list as status changes. Have thought it was licked many times, but I was wrong many times. Problem: Cold start rough - idle rough until warm up. Was much worse - required multiple (up to 10) starting attempts to get going, so the problem was complex (many separate issues) 1- repaired fuel line leak - by battery under hood. This brought the number of start attempts down to 2 or 3 2- replaced coolant temp sensor. Now starts on first attempt but tries to stall & runs rough until warm. Then runs GREAT. At this point the local independent VW/Audi mechanic had about given up. Told me to bring it to dealer for computer diagnostic & then back to him. NO! I will fix it myself or let someone who _really_ knows these cars fix it. My efforts were futile. Broke a banjo fuel bolt in the fuel distrib while checking fuel pressure. Lucky the remaining piece just turned right out. Can't figure why it broke. In frustration, I consulted the Mechanics List on the Audifans web page. Closest guy sounds pretty good - we'll give him a try. This is the listing. Concord Precision Auto Works (gene@insti.physics.sunysb.edu) (516) 997-4328 151 Jericho Turnpike -- just off LIE exit 40 (eastbound, at the Texaco gas station) Long Island, NY The owner, Marino Dimov, is a big quattro and racing enthusiast and simply a great guy. The shop is usually busy, so it's a good idea to call first. Went in & saw Marino (Sat - when other mechanics don't like to work). Gene is right - Marino is a great guy. We talked Audis a bit while he worked on a VW. He was very busy & asked me to come back another time (very politely). We talked some more & by the time I was ready to leave the car had sat long enough to at least listen to the problem. Marino took out his long screwdriver & leaned out my fuel mixture. Things smoothed up at the turn of a screw. That is what I mean by someone who _really_ knows these cars. I asked Marino how much $ & he said NO CHARGE. Wanna bet I go back to him! Can't wait till morning when the ultimate cold start test will be possible. Will let you know how it turns out. Jeff
