I use an air impact wrench with a deep-well 17mm socket and it usually spins 
it right off.  However, if you're replacing the shock, then simply grab the 
shaft with a pair of Vise-Grips and use a deep-well socket on a ratchet to 
remove the nut.  If you're NOT replacing the shock, then also place a rag 
around the shaft to keep from scratching it.
