RE: 86 5K TQ bugs - fuel injection?
replace your injectors
BTW- you won't smell fuel from a fuel injected engine because there is no
way for the fumes to get out of the intake manifold.

Subject: 86 5K TQ bugs - fuel injection?
Bought the above car about a year ago and has run quite well up to now.
Ever since buying it, there was the hot start problem. I couldn't find
the problem so I wired up the cold start valve to a momentary switch in
the dash. Now, whenever the car won't start I just hit the switch,
squirting some gas right into the intake manifold and the car starts
(not smoothly though). It works, but I would still like to fix the
actual problem which is...
Sometimes, after the car has been running, shut down and been sitting
for anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, it JUST WON'T START. The engine
doesn't cough or sputter or anything. Just crank and crank and
When it eventually does go, there is no indication of flooding (smell of
gas, black smoke) Ergo, it is starving for fuel. The thing that really
doesn't make sense to me is that if it is starving, why does it
eventually start, and keep running? Any help out there?
To make matters worse it has developed another problem recently. It
used to idle quite nicely right around 800 rpm. All of a sudden it
won't idle any more at all. If I take my foot off the gas it dies.
After running a while, especially at high rpm (hey, I get carried away
once in a while) the car won't totally die, but rpm drops to about 4-500
rpm and is very rough. Even if I give it some gas to bring it up to 1500
rpm it is a very rough idle.
Air filter and fuel filter are new. Spark plugs are not new, but I took
them all out and they are in good shape. Has anyone who has had similar
problems and can you tell me what you did?
Any help is greatly appreciated
