All it took was some experimentation with the degree of counterclockwise
rotation of the resoldered throttle switch. I finally got it right by
rotating the loosened switch full clockwise with the engine running, and
then turning it counterclockwise until the microswitch clicked and the idle
slowed down. Went right down to 750!

Echoing Scott's website admonition: Everyone with a 5k that has the
original throttle switch would probably greatly benefit from either
replacing the switch with the updated model, or at least resoldering the
internal connections.
