Re: A4 recall
Methinks the splash shield/brake pad campaign affects only countries with
specific brake pads/environmental conditions. For some reason I think the
US pads are not the same part numbers as the European pads, although I may
The pad material absorbs/reacts with new types of liquid road salts and an
oily film forms on the pad. After sustained driving or the car having been
parked (ie. cold pads) the initial brake application with normal pedal
pressure can result in sub-normal decelaration rates. Worst conditions are
around freezing on slushy/wet roads. The press in Sweden/Finland had a
heyday with this last winter.
The larger splash shields and pads went into production in early 1999, and
all cars produced before certain VINs have received new bits.
FWIW, other makes have similar problems, and are telling their customers
that this is normal, but the customer can buy new parts to improve braking
performance. I prefer the recall method - more thorough and no cost to
customer. A friend of mine with a new Saab was recently told that he must
pay the full pop...
