Bazaar!

Some of you will be happy to know that the Marketplace now allows basic HTML formatting tags in the description field of posts. Cody Forbes asked, and I implemented. Read on for the full skinny, as well as how you can make your own suggestions for what is a very popular service (the marketplace receives about 5,000 unique hits per day!)

This was a deceptively complex feature, because you don't want to allow all tags- that can lead to problems like cross-site scripting. However, thanks to an existing project called HTML Purifier, adding support for the most common formatting tags was quick and painless- and in the future, we may be able to allow links to popular photo sharing sites like flickr, smugmug, imageshack, etc. You can use the following tags: p (paragraph) br (line break) i/strong (italic, bold), and ul/li/ol (lists.) Don't forget to "close" your tags, or your post might look funny.

This came up by way of a discussion about individual people posting a large number of items, a complaint that has been heard before. The person in question had several dozen items listed for sale. That's not cool, and they've been zapped. However, listing multiple parts was tricky when the Marketplace software wouldn't even recognize a carriage return. Now you can do a list, with formatting! Example:

  • Headlight from an '88 5000S
  • 3B engine, harness and ECU included. Sale pending.
  • Nut, from behind wheel. Needs tightening.

The Marketplace is hugely popular, not just within Audifans, but on other forums as well. It's important to consider feedback from the community, so I've created marketplace suggestion page on our Knowledgebase. You'll see links appear on marketplace pages appear soon so that everyone knows about it. Hopefully this will encourage more people to test the waters with participating in the Knowledgebase, not just browsing it!

Comments? Feel free to post one under this entry- but remember, suggestions about the Marketplace should be made on the wiki!
