The Audi Coupe GT was built from 1981 to 1987, and underwent many changes over the years. There were two distinct body trim styles, two main sets of interior appointments, three engines and several different sets of brakes. Technically, the early models were not called "GT".

Exterior

The two door Coupe GT bears a strong resemblance to the (turbo) Quattro Coupe, but lacks the "quattro" script rear lightbar insert and does not have box-flared fenders.

While it looks like a hatchback, it actually has a trunk.

Early coupes had quad rectangular headlights, while after the body trim makeover for model year 1985, they had aerodynamic lenses. The aero lenses in the US used the 9004 bulb and provided terrible lighting, in other countries they used H4/H1 systems that worked very well.

In 1986, for the 100th anniversary of the automobile, a Commemorative Edition was released, featuring Alpine White or Graphite Black paint matched on the outside rearview mirrors, rear spoiler, and side window surrounds. For the Alpine White cars, the wheels were also painted body color. These special models were also equipped with an outrageous red leather interior and a digital instrumentation.

In 1987, there was an optional "triple white" package. These cars were painted Alpine White with body color outside rear view mirrors, trunk spoilers, side window surrounds, wheels, and white leather interior along with the digital instrumentation.

Engines

All models utilized Constant Injection System 5-cylinder in-line, 10 valve engines. From 1981 to 1984 it was a 2.1 liter engine managed with Bosch CIS, from 1985 to 1987 a 2.2 with CIS-E, and the 1987.5 "Special Build" featured the high compression 2.3 with the knock-sensing CIS-E3.

Drivetrain

Most Coupe GT models are front-wheel drive only. Several different five speed transmissions were used, with gear ratios typically lower on later cars. Clutches prior to 1985 were cable actuated, and from 1985 on were hydraulic.
