Generic OBD-II Code Reader

Most Audi Fans will agree that Ross Tech's VAG-COM is the Audi of OBD-II readers and diagnostic tools. But you can read and clear basic codes using a generic OBD-II scanner.

I was due for a state inspection. My mechanic had just replaced spark plugs and cleared a previous Check Engine Light (CEL) code. So when the CEL re-appeared, I was looking for a cheap and quick solution. The pre-1996 (U.S.) Audis have a procedure that requires only a paper clip. But my A4 is a 1999 and has OBD-II. What to do?

I picked up a generic OBD-II scanner at my local flaps. Mine is made by Actron, model number CP9125, cost about US$70.

1. Actron CP9125 PocketScan.

(Sorry for the blurry images; I think a need a new camera with image stabilization.)

Its operation couldn't be simpler. You plug it in, start the car, push a button, and wait to see the codes. Push the button again to see the next code (if any). Push it a third time to see the I/M (Inspection/Maintenance) Monitor codes. Many states use the I/M status to determine if your car is ready for inspection/emissions testing. You push a second button to clear the codes.

The OBD-II port is found on the bottom edge of the dash board, right above the driver's left knee. The hood release is to the left in the picture.

2. A4 OBD-II port.

The code reader's conector plugs into the port.

3. OBD-II reader connected.

Here's my first code: P0432. For the record, the book says that is "Main Catalyst Below Threshold (Bank 2)".

4. Code P0432.

The Actron reader comes with a CD-ROM that contains MS Windows software that translates the code into an easier-to-understand message. P0432 is "Main Catalyst Below Threshold (Bank 2)", just like the book says.

And for those that don't do Windows, the software runs on Ubuntu. Install it through Wine (cd /media/cdrom0; wine Setup.exe). Run the application from the main Applications menu (Applications -> Wine -> Programs -> DTCLookup -> DTCLookup). When the application comes up, you enter the Year, Make, Model, and DTC, and Voila, it gives you the short description of the error. YMMV.

5. Actron Software on Ubuntu under Wine.
