Audi platform designations consist of a letter and number. Example: C3.

Letter codes
Platform letter codes specify which of the four major platforms a car belongs to. The letter code usually delineates the size.
- A platform
- B platform cars: 4000, Coupe GT, 80, 90, A4(model), S4, RS4.
- C platform cars: 5000, 100, 200, A6, S6, RS6.
- D platform cars: V8, A8
Number code
The number code specifies a major chassis revision.
Example designations
- C3 is the designation for the "Type 44" 5000, 100, and 200.
- D2 is the designation for the first generation A8.
Other References
Cars can also be grouped by "Type". For example, a 4000 in North America, from, say 1987, is known as a "Type 85", while a 1988 90 is known as a "Type 89". The C3 platform (80's 5000, 100, and 200) is also known as the "Type 44".
