Installing ETKA on Ubuntu Linux

It can be done, easily. You need to first install Wine, the Windows Emulator. Then install ETKA under Wine. I used Ubuntu, so my examples use Ubuntu.

Install Wine

To install Wine from a terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) enter the following command:

> sudo apt-get install wine

Follow the prompts. Wine will be installed in /usr/bin. It will also create a .wine directory in your home directory, e.g., ~/.wine.

Install ETKA

Once Wine is installed and running, use it to install ETKA. Insert the ETKA CD in your CD drive. If this is the only CDROM/DVD, Ubuntu mounts the disk as /media/cdrom0. If this is the second CDROM/DVD you have inserted, it will be mounted as /media/cdrom1.

From a terminal window, enter the following commands:

> cd /media/cdrom0 > wine setup.exe

Give it time; it's slow. You should see the splash screen. Install to drive C:. Click on the "Installation" button (which may be in German). The installation may show some warnings; click on Yes or OK at each warning. After about an hour, you'll see the word "Done". Press Enter to get back to the terminal prompt.

Running ETKA

The easiest way is to do it from the main menu.

Applications -> Wine -> Programs -> ETKA -> ETKA

If you are a command line person, the installation should have been written to the .wine directory in your home directory (~/). Run Wine, giving the ETKA program as the argument.

> wine ~/.wine/drive_c/etka/prog/Etka7.exe

Note that Linux is case-sensitive, and the name of the executable is Etka7.exe.

After a minute or so, the ETKA program should appear. The first time it appears it will be in German. Change it to US English:

At the top of the window are 3 groups of menu icons. In the left-most group, bottom left, is an icon which, when you hover your mouse over it, should read "Liste der Funktionen anziegen". Click on the icon. In the pop-up menu, select "Sprechauswahl", then "US Englisch".

Now you can read the buttons and menus.
