Easy answer for any trekkie..."inertial dampeners."  These little 
mysterious devices have only one feature...failing every time some 
intergalactic bad guy happens along and takes a big potshot at ya.

(who thinks the show would be far more interesting if artificial 
gravity conked out once in a while)
