Leaking hydraulic fluid

Mike is almost certainly correct. This problem is
uncommon but known by both Bentley and ZF. See
Bentley pg. 48.26 (last row in table) and ZF's
troubleshooting table from <
http://www.zf-group.com/am/pc/ps/ampcps03.phtml > (2nd
and 7th rows).

I had almost this same problem for a few months until
a month ago, except only 3/4 of my fluid emptied out,
enough to where the low-fluid lamp started flashing
sporadically. My P/S was intermittent but my brakes
remained fine. Then a month ago my mechanic "fixed
it" so all the fluid ran out and the pump froze and
the pulley end of the shaft twisted off the rest of
the pump.

I've been running without one since, and actually
getting used to it. The steering is like my old '62
Dart ... well ... harder, but the braking is like the
'70 VW Camper I used to drive. Those Olympic speed
skaters have got nothing on at least my right thigh
any more.

Anyway, after a few months of explaining the obvious
to Blau they honored ZF's three-year warranty and send
a replacement pump a few weeks ago. I plan to put it
in soon. If yours is younger than 3 years, ZF will
honor its warranty even if their retailer won't.

Good luck,

When I had this symptom, it was the Power Steering

Subject: Leaking hydraulic fluid

Help! My quattro is leaking hydraulic fluid what
appears to be from the
reservoir itself. From the cap!! When the car starts
and the system
pressurizes and I move the steering, it starts to
bubble out of the cap like
it's over pressurized. I don't see fluid leaking
anywhere else other than
there but it's bad enough that it empties the
reservoir in about 15 minutes
under pressure. Do I have a pressure valve that's not
functioning anymore?
The car stood for about a year without anyone driving
