Shifter boot malfuntion - 1987 5000

I recall someone posting a long time ago about repairing a mid-80s shifter
boot frame.  The problem, if I remember correctly, is that there are little
plastic tabs on the frame that are supposed to engage a lip in the surround
or something like that, and the tabs fail.  I can't remember what the fix
was but it might come up in a search of the "archives" for the quattro list
