Semantics aside, worn out or blown out, they have to be replaced or rebuilt.

3 of the 4 8 year old Koni yellows on my CQ "wore out" -
seemed to go from working well to being beyond the point of 
adjustability within 3k miles of use.

Beyond adjustability means that the strut piston rod collapses into 
the insert body with little or no pressure.

They are not gas charged, but I expect them to be able to not 
collapse into the body before I have the chance to reinstall the the 
spring and
strut bushing/locking nut
