[Biturbos4] Turbos Reliability & Replacement Cost (was: 2000 S4 Running Hot)

If you can get a good deal on an RS4 - buy it!
AOA should have imported RS4s to N.America for the same price as the S4 back in 2000 - it would have saved them many $$$ on turbo fialure claims.
For those of us in N.America with the K03 powered S4, an upgrade to K04 turbos makes sense, if you want to see real performance.
I made the mistake of racing an S4 when I was NOT MODDED - I had my A$$ handed to me. When we stopped, the other driver laughed and said "I don't need no stinking chip, I'm powered by K04s"
>From that day on, I've gradually upgraded my S4, step-by-step, because I couldn't afford the high price for K04 installs a few yrs ago. Now, the price for K04 has come down somewhat and is more reasonable, especially if you are already modded.

I'm in the UK, there's RS4's for sale most weeks:

So what I meant was an upgrade to the RS4 - definitely the least

>DEFINITELY MORE BULLET-PROOF. Plus, the sginificantly higher HP doesn't hurt either.
>Beaware, you just don't dump/install K04s on a stock S4. You will need to upgrade fueling, intake & exhaust (DPs) plumbing, possibly the tranny - if Tip, ECU - if you choose - u can run K04s on K03 software (stage 3- on the mod list).
>If you don't do these things - you will significantly compromise the performance of the K04s - basically throwing $$$ away. Since I've already done many of these things - while still on (upgraded) K03s - it will be a relatively easy install for me (with the exception of upgrading the Tip tranny to handle FULL K04 powah).

>>Hi Grant, JY and all,
>>This has been an interesting and informative discussion. From what I've read and heard on these list and AW forums, it seems like luck has more to do with the turbos failing than anything else. Obviously chipping kills them a lot sooner, and people they have chipped their 2.7t should realize that, but even non-chipped car are not safe from it either. Someone on this list 2 weeks ago (sorry I forgot who) had his turbos bit the dust at the tender age of 52k miles, and he supposedly followed all the usual procedures like proper warmup, cooldown and uses synthetic oil, and his car wasn't chipped.
>>So we've established how and why the turbos fail (ok maybe not, it still seems more like a black art), my next question is how many owners are actually willing to shell out $7500 Cdn ($6000 USD) to replace those pesky K03s when they meet their maker?
>Do the RS4's K04 turbos suffer a similar fate with similar regularity
>or are they more bulletproof?
>Maybe I could persuade the wife on account of it being more reliable..
