You are partially correct. K04s can be run on K03 software/maps and produce more boost (power) than K03s. K04s have bigger compressor wheels - thus taking in and exiting more air/exhaust than K03s. It's when u upgrade the fueling and ECU (software/maps) that the K04s can reach max performance.
The gentlemen that I raced had a FULL AWE K04 set-up. I happen to stop by AWE (a well known S4 tuner - for the uninformed) a few weeks later (it's 20 min from my home) and saw HIS car setting in the bay - getting MORE work done (he already kicked my A$$ a few weeks earlier). That's where I found out about all the mods he had done.
Since I own a Tip, a K04 upgrade can be more expensive than a 6 spd, because the torque converters on the S4 Tip cannot handle full K04 power w/o potential failure - that's the general consensus in the B5-S4 community. The AWE Tip Chip helps with speedier Tip/Automatic shifting (I have this too) when the S4 is chipped/or upgraded to K04s, but doesn't help reduce pressure on the Tip tranny produced by K04s or K03 hybrids (K03s with K04 internals).

S'funny because I always thought that a K03 - K04 upgrade in itself
didn't do a great deal and that you needed a new chip/remap to take
advantage of them - otherwise they just ran at the same boost levels
as the K03's?
