Just to follow-up, it turned out to be a double failure: the
alternator (voltage regulator) expired and the battery had a
shorted-out cell. The latter explains why there was so little warning
between the time the alternator quit for good and when the battery
completely died.

There may well be a cause-and-effect reationship here, but hard to
tell after the fact...
