Now we know that these EGTs (Mooney and sundry others) were measured off the
leanest cylinder which was usually the one closest to the firewall
(hottest).  So we now have STCs for tuned intake runners to overcome this
and multicylinder EGT digital readouts and so can run at lean of peak for
more power using 10-15% less fuel.

Pitch down, throttle up!
