17mm hex head socket

Tried this on mine - twice. Both times the bolt sheared without budging the
drain plug. Have a hardened steel 17mm allen wrench now, still want to cut
it into a stub so I can use a 1/2 inch drive and socket on it.

my $0.02

available from local sources other than mail order?

Your local Sears will have one.

However, how about a cheap and easy version (that you may already have in
your basement)? Take an M10 bolt and two M10 nuts. Double-nut the nuts onto
the end of the bolt. The head of the bolt will fit right into the drain
plug, and the double-nutted side works great in your 17mm socket.
