Or the impeller itself may have worn or damaged blades.  I've removed
pumps on the V8Q and 5KS that had plastic (nylon? whatever) impellers,
both had chipped/missing blades.  

I've also noticed that certain radiator stop-leak products act like sand
inside the engine and eat away at the impeller over time.  No direct Audi
experience with this, but have seen it on more than one American car.
