Well... I also got to live with an S8 for quite a while, and drove it twice cross-country. To me, it's not close to apples and apples with an UrS. With the slushbox, you lose the sporting aspect, IMO. The fuel mileage, well, you might have managed 26 on the highway, but I sure never saw that. More commonly were figures in the low to mid teens for mixed driving.
Great car? Maybe. Wonderful to travel in? Unquestionably. But again, a pricey option... and just wait until that trans has to be rebuilt... and it WILL.

Automatic and all I love my A8 on H&R coilovers. It'll run circles around a lot
of much more "sporty" cars, comfy as can be, looks GREAT, plenty of room, very
nice on road trips, not horrible fuel economy (26mph on the highway, less around
town but mostly because I love the V8 torque a bit too much).
Another option would be to buy a fresher urS that somebody has recently put a
bunch of work into and wants to bail out of.
The only VAG product I'd buy newer than a D2 A8 would be an A3q DSG 2.0t and
that's only because, as Clarkson would put it, I have a 'crisis' every time I
click up a gear in a modded DSG car.
