[urq] Audi A3Bruce Bell bbell at surview.comWed Sep 5 12:35:07 EDT 2007
My wife and oldest son each have an '06 A3 3.2 w/dsg. They both love them, Jason for the sporting nature and Susie because it drives like an automatic. It is quite interesting that her little red A3 gets more looks and walk arounds than any of my other cars. Ed, what your friend is most likely experiencing is not the car accelerating on the downshift but the engine revving to match rpm. These little guys blip the throttle on the downshift....instant heel & toe :-) My wife replaced her '05 (B6) A4 1.8t with the A3 as she didn't like the turbo lag. She defiantly wouldn't like the lag in either the urq or the urs6. She loves the 3.2. I think it is a really fun car to drive. It doesn't have quite the handling or power of my '06 S4 Avant m6; but, it doesn't disappoint either. Jason took his the ACNA event at Miller last year. He passed many S4's and other faster cars simply because the DSG frees you up to concentrate on drive. Learning a course like miller isn't easy and having to always be mindful of your gear selection slows most drivers down considerably. Definitely don't buy one until you take a drive. DSG isn't for everyone and everyone has their own opinions. If you want Quattro, I think the 3.2 is your only option. She lives on a hill and one of the first mornings on the way to work, she said she downshift for engine braking and the car accelerated briefly when it made the gear change. Is that normal? It had very few miles on it at the time so I suggested that maybe it needed to learn that behavior or that maybe she should have her foot lightly on the brake so it knows she's downshifting for engine braking. Beats me.
