I think that Louis-Alain might have caught my paranoia about oil pumps. The typical failure mode of the 4 cyl pumps was for carbon gunge to jam the relief valve and for the cogs to wear groves into the base plate The 4 cyl pump is a vastly different design with smaller cogs so I guess that they work harder and wear faster. The 4cyl relief valve is also not a serviceable part and the pumps are dirt cheap. That said, a set of big end shells and an oil pump will generally restore weak oil pressure in a 4 cyl VW engine if anyone ever goes that way Geraint -----Original Message----- From: urq-bounces at audifans.com [mailto:urq-bounces at audifans.com] On Behalf Of Brandon Rogers Sent: 15 April 2008 12:03 To: 'Louis-Alain Richard'; 'Jim Haseltine'; 'Urq' Subject: Re: [urq] RE : Bottom end rebuilt I would think used should be fine - I don't recall ever hearing about one going bad.... With new bearings, the oil pressure should be good. Anyone knows a vendor for this oil pump 034 115 105A (superseded to 105B)? BTW, a new OEM oil pump is a 432$ affair on this side of the pound... 034EFI sells one for 300$. Louis-Alain > >3- Is the oil pump a device that usually need replacement, as on the >'murican engines ? Is it replaceable in situ with the engine in the car >if I discover later that I should have replaced it now ? I replace them if the engine has done more than 150K miles. Remove the back plate - if it's scored then replace the pump. You _can_ replace the pump with the engine in the car but it's not easy - I'd change it now.
