I second the Bilstien HDs and standard springs, It works well on the golf, but I have just ordered a new set of 4. The originals were getting a bit leaky and I figured that after 20 years, they were probably past it. They are still lots stiffer than stock shocks though. AFAIK, when they were new they were Group N not HD, but that's progress for you. I would also not be surprised to find out that that's what Dave Sutton used to use. Let's just say I FEEL your pain. I went with stock '85 springs and Bilstaind HD's and were very happy with that combo. Nice on long trips yet stiff enough to give you smile around corners. I also had rear sway bar (same size as front). It would have been nice to see your car in CO. Hope this helps.
